The radon model power fan is used to positively pressurize (blow air into) the crawl space in order to minimize emission of radon from the soil. Radon is a colorless, odorless gas that is a result of rock decomposition and moves strictly by pressure effects. The major concern is the concentration level, which if high enough, has been known to cause lung cancer. Some areas in the US are known to have high levels of radon, while others do not. To determine if a particular geographic location is known to have elevated concentrations, contact the local or state government offices. The Environmental Protection Agency is another source for information regarding radon and the test kits used to measure concentration levels. If the suction model power fan is utilized with a foundation that emits radon from the soil, the radon may be preferentially drawn into the crawl space from the soil and radon levels may become elevated. If radon is not a problem, the suction crawl space ventilators should be an acceptable means to accomplish a powered crawl space ventilation system. This system should prevent any crawl space air (moisture & odor) from entering the living space above.
