INTRODUCTION
Their common name reflects that they routinely peck wood,
for food (insects), for shelter (nests), and for drumming to
establish territories and attract mates. Woodpeckers may be
nuisance or damaging pests when they attack wood structures, but
they are federally protected. There are 23 species found in
North America.
HABITS
As part of their courtship males and occasionally some females
will drum to attract a mate and to announce their territory
during breeding season. These critters reach pests status
because of their drumming on structures and/ or attacking wood
structures. Insects in or on the structure, storing nuts, or
preparing a potential nesting site could be the cause of the
drumming. For drumming purposes, they prefer substrates, which
resonate loudly, such as gutters, vents, metal siding, drain
pipes, chimney caps, roof vents, etc. Drumming may be done
several times each day and can continue for several days or
weeks. It may result in damage to the surface used and/ or a
most annoying racket. Cedar and redwood siding is the most
preferred surface for nesting.
|
Woodpeckers are protected by the Federal Migratory Bird Treaty
Act as migratory, non game birds. State laws also protect some
species. Exclusion is the best overall bird control technique, but
repellents are the preferred choice by most homeowners. In
general, decoys do not work. Although treating insect infested
wood may have some merit, woodpeckers often attack sound and/or
un-infested wood and hence such treatment is not appropriate.
Our woodpecker products help repair damage caused by woodpeckers
to wood structures, plus they provide an aromatic, non-toxic,
natural bird control deterrent that works against woodpeckers and other
birds that peck. When the birds drill, they are met with a nasty
taste and odor, making it undesirable to peck there again. These
products work on most of the 23 U.S. woodpecker species, with
the exception of the Arizona woodpecker.

Hole Filler & Taste-Repeller Kit |
|
NEW! Woodpecker hole
filler, which is an environmentally safe, non-toxic resin repair
system specifically designed to repair damage caused by
woodpeckers to wood structures. In addition to wood repair
capabilities, the system provides an aromatic, non-toxic, natural
bird deterrent that works against woodpeckers and other birds that
peck. It is used where woodpeckers have drilled to prevent further
damage, and then followed up with the new Taste-Repeller spray
repellent over the entire problem area to deter future drilling.
What is shown can be purchased as a kit or separately. If your
home is not wood and the woodpecker is pecking on something else.
You probably need the Taste Repeller spray and the Repeller
Ribbon.

Tanglefoot® Tangle Guard Repeller Ribbon
|

|
Tangle Guard
Repeller Ribbon is a holographic foil strip that drives unwanted
birds away by producing an optical and audible discomfort zone.
The Ribbon is an economical and humane deterrent that is easy to
cut and apply. Tip: Attach with push pins or duct tape.
Attention: Some companies sell the Mylar tape 1/2"
x 300' rolls because it is inexpensive. Our technicians
have used both and they prefer the Holographic Ribbon
over the Mylar tape. The Holographic Ribbon is
2" instead of 1/2"wide and it has that
holographic type reflection which scares the bird faster. |

We
live in the beautiful mountains just south of Yosemite
National Park.
Little known to most, one of the most wood destroying
pests in this area is the Acorn Woodpecker, also a
protected species here. They love oak, pine, and the wood
siding on our home. Trying to find a solution to the
abundance of holes and acorn deposits left by these
beautiful little birds has been quite time consuming. We
are finding the most reasonable and cost effective method,
has been to purchase the Woodpecker Solution offered
through your company. We are on our second home in the
same area and have used the Woodpecker Solution as an
additive in the paint while repainting the exterior of
both homes. It takes a while for the woodpeckers to get
the idea that the new solution does not taste good (old
habits die hard), but by the next season, we noticed after
we repainted our first house, there was significantly less
damage being done. This time, we decided to keep some of
the solution on hand, just for touchups. It has a pleasant
odor, and mixes well without changing the color of the
paint. Thank you for your assistance and excellent
customer service.
A
satisfied customer with very perturbed woodpeckers!
